TASA Set to Bring New Growth to the SA Tooling Industry
The Tooling Association of South Africa (TASA) held
their first Eastern Gauteng Region event on 14 March 2013, where members and
potential members from this region gathered to discuss the progress that TASA
has made in the development of key initiatives and the impact that these will
have in bringing about positive change to the Tool, Die and Mouldmaking
industry of South Africa.
Johannesburg, GP
March 22, 2013 – For many years, the South African Tool, Die and Mouldmaking
(TDM) Industry struggled to defend its market share with increased competition
from low cost imports. TASA was established in 2004 to intervene and revitalise
the industry to create a local TDM industry that is internationally accepted.
Now, nearly 9 years later, TASA has made great strides to bring about positive
change through the development of skilled artisans and in-company support
mechanisms for companies in the TDM industry.
At the event,
Henk Snyman, Secretary of TASA, spoke about the various initiatives that TASA
has put in place to advance the industry, including the Skills Development
Programme which has so far seen R110 million invested into the training of more
than 500 tool-making artisans countrywide of who 213 will be qualified in Gauteng by 2014. One of the main barriers hindering
the TDM industry at the moment is the lack of skills to fill vacant positions
within tool-making companies. TASA focusses on bridging this gap by providing
training and offering access to apprentices for on-the-job training.
Another area that
TASA focusses on is Enterprise Development – enabling South African tool-making
companies themselves to become more competitive by giving them better access to
the market. Snyman presented attendees with TASA’s standardised Contract for
Toolmakers, Benchmarking Principles, and Consulting and Enterprise Management
Toolkits which together, aim to structure the way that companies and their
processes are laid out to promote co-operation between tool rooms and to make
it easier for customers to do business with South African companies.
By developing these
initiatives and through regular regional events such as this, TASA strives to
bring together the capabilities and knowledge to give toolmakers and
tool-making companies the tools to strengthen the trade in their region, thus
contributing to a better, more globally competitive market share for economic
growth. According to Snyman, ”I can now take you to South African tool makers
who have deployed the TASA toolkit and can take you from prototype to
production in four weeks “

Unique items addressed at Afrimold Exhibition and TASA conference: 10-12-October 2012
Mr. Henk Snyman- GTI CEO
I wish to extend
a most sincere invitation to all TASA members and everyone that is remotely
interested in the future of the toolmaking industry. The last few months has
seen a significant change in the toolmaking industry and also the support
services that TASA as an organization can now offer its members.
STANDARDISED CONTRACT
One of the
greatest challenges of the SMME toolmaking companies is cash flow. We have
anecdotal evidence that there are several of the major clients that extends
payments for tools to 90 or 180 days. Furthermore when it comes to payment, all
types of interesting quality questions are raised by his clients. We should all
acknowledge that this is patently unfair to small companies that are struggling
to survive
With financial
support from the Gauteng Tooling Initiative a Standardized Contract for the use by the toolmaking
fraternity has been developed. This contract has been especially tailored to
address the problem of clients requesting design changes, not paying according
to the agreed schedule and changing the accept/reject quality criteria
depending on which person does the final inspection.
Attorney Peter v
R Coetzee is giving a talk at the TASA conference and he will also be available
for consultation at the TASA stand at Afrimold Exhibition.
FRANCHISING – ACCESSING THE MARKET
TASA is
launching the concept of a tooling franchise. What this entails is that a
number of companies will work together as a franchise thereby improving their
profile towards the customers and allowing them to collectively quote on more
tools to be delivered in a shorter period because of cooperating as a cluster.
The companies
participating in the franchise will meticulously measure their delivery,
quality and cost so that they can compete with the international Chinese and
European firms. This is the way forward to the creation of a cluster that will
be able to quote on and successfully compete on the type of tooling that the
OEMs and first-tier suppliers requiring South Africa.
At Afrimold TASA
will have a section of such a mini factory that complies with the TASA
franchise guidelines. Henk Snyman and Neil Sapsford will be at the TASA stand at
Afrimold.

AFRIMOLD CONFERENCE:TASA Launches Management Tools for TDM Industry.
AFRIMOLD CONFERENCE – 10 to 12 October 2012 at
Gallagher Estate, Midrand:
TASA Launches Management Tools for TDM Industry.
At the forthcoming Afrimold Conference
Attorney Pieter Van R Coetzee is going to introduce a definitive contract
created especially for the needs of the TDM and Precision Machining Industries.
He will be presenting this at the Conference in a paper titled: The TOOLS of
the law – Creating a new Culture.
The contract content and the application thereof
will be further explained as Attorney Coetzee will also be on the TASA stand at
the Afrimold Exhibition. This will provide TASA members with the opportunity to
be further briefed when visiting the TASA stand.
Attorney Coetzee states that one of the
biggest challenges facing the South African Toolmaking industry is how to
correctly and effectively contract with the client. In conversation with the
TDM industry the need for a standardised tool supply contract emerged as a
significant and immediate need.
After consulting with key players in the
Toolmaking industry, suppliers and their clients, the core elements of what
need to be addressed were identified to be a clear description of the
contracting parties and the expectation and offering of the contracting parties
to the elements of Quality, Cost and Delivery. Furthermore it was clear that
the contract change process needs to be agreed up front and that changes had to
be very clearly defined and authorised by the contracting parties.
Toolmaking is a technical science and it
became very clear that a technical problem solving methodology should be included
in the contract. This was done in a very elegant manner with the inclusion of a
panel of problem solving experts as part of the contract. This feature of the contract is addressed in
the paper to be delivered at the Afrimold Conference.
Attorney Coetzee stated that the next step
is to provide Legal Protection Insurance to Toolmakers using the standardised
contract. He is currently in negotiation with underwriters to put such a
protective legal umbrella in place.
This is the first of several standardised
methodologies that is being implemented by TASA for the TDM industry. It is
envisaged that within the next 12 months all the tools and methodologies for
the TASA “Franchise” will be in place.
A number of sponsored tickets are available
to TASA members to attend the Conference. Please contact bernardc@gtiweb.co.za or neils@gtiweb.co.za for these tickets.

Support for the Tool Die and Mould Making and Precision Machining Apprentices
The TDM Apprentices needs samples of your tools!
The NTIP [National Tooling Initiative Program] programme is currently training in excess of 600 TDM apprentices in 12 colleges in six provinces in South Africa.
The success rate of these apprentices and their ability to absorb the complexities of tool making has astounded the teaching staff and the industry. What is even more surprising is that the ladies on the program [34%] are doing as well as the men and in some instances they are the stars in the program.
We have a requirement to show to the students within the classroom environment what the various types of tools look like. For each of the 12 colleges we require redundant but still functional tools.
We require plastic injection, blow moulding, stamping, metal forming as well as press tooling. Also, tooling used in the casting industry such as tooling for high pressure aluminium and sand castings. As the moulds is going to be used for training purposes, we would prefer smaller single cavity injection, blow moulding or simple press and costing tools.
So we as the NTIP and TASA are respectfully requesting you to support us by donating your redundant tooling doing for this worthy cause.
If you have such tools taking up valuable space in your factory please contact Carlos Barbosa on 079 873 7896 or at the e-mail address of carlosb@ntipweb.co.za . He will arrange for the tooling to be collected by the nearest FET College that is participating in the program.
