TASA Launches Management Tools for TDM Industry.

At the forthcoming Afrimold Conference Attorney Pieter Van R Coetzee is going to introduce a definitive contract created especially for the needs of the TDM and Precision Machining Industries. He will be presenting this at the Conference in a paper titled: The TOOLS of the law – Creating a new Culture.

 

The contract content and the application thereof will be further explained as Attorney Coetzee will also be on the TASA stand at the Afrimold Exhibition. This will provide TASA members with the opportunity to be further briefed when visiting the TASA stand.

 

Attorney Coetzee states that one of the biggest challenges facing the South African Toolmaking industry is how to correctly and effectively contract with the client. In conversation with the TDM industry the need for a standardised tool supply contract emerged as a significant and immediate need.

 

After consulting with key players in the Toolmaking industry, suppliers and their clients, the core elements of what need to be addressed were identified to be a clear description of the contracting parties and the expectation and offering of the contracting parties to the elements of Quality, Cost and Delivery. Furthermore it was clear that the contract change process needs to be agreed up front and that changes had to be very clearly defined and authorised by the contracting parties.

 

Toolmaking is a technical science and it became very clear that a technical problem solving methodology should be included in the contract. This was done in a very elegant manner with the inclusion of a panel of problem solving experts as part of the contract.  This feature of the contract is addressed in the paper to be delivered at the Afrimold Conference.

 

Attorney Coetzee stated that the next step is to provide Legal Protection Insurance to Toolmakers using the standardised contract. He is currently in negotiation with underwriters to put such a protective legal umbrella in place.

 

This is the first of several standardised methodologies that is being implemented by TASA for the TDM industry. It is envisaged that within the next 12 months all the tools and methodologies for the TASA “Franchise” will be in place.

Support for the Tool Die and Mould Making and Precision Machining Apprentices

The TDM Apprentices needs samples of your tools!


The NTIP [National Tooling Initiative Program] programme is currently training in excess of 600 TDM apprentices in 12 colleges in six provinces in South Africa.

The success rate of these apprentices and their ability to absorb the complexities of tool making has astounded the teaching staff and the industry. What is even more surprising is that the ladies on the program [34%] are doing as well as the men and in some instances they are the stars in the program.

We have a requirement to show to the students within the classroom environment what the various types of tools look like. For each of the 12 colleges we require redundant but still functional tools.

We require plastic injection, blow moulding, stamping, metal forming as well as press tooling. Also, tooling used in the casting industry such as tooling for high pressure aluminium and sand castings. As the moulds is going to be used for training purposes, we would prefer smaller single cavity injection, blow moulding or simple press and costing tools.

So we as the NTIP and TASA are respectfully requesting you to support us by donating your redundant tooling doing for this worthy cause.

Toolmaking Curriculum Development

It is with pride and confidence that I am putting out this open request to all associated with toolmaking and precision machining to comment on the work done on Toolmaking curriculum development.
A subsidiary of TASA (Toolmaking Association of South Africa), the National Tooling Initiative Program(NTIP) (Pty) Ltd has as a national objective, the rehabilitation of the South African Tool, Die and Mould Making (TDM) industry.

This program’s first objective is skills development. NTIP runs a flagship skill development program for Tool, Die and Mould-making. This includes Precision Machining. See the link www.tdmpowered.co.za. for details on the program.

This program aims to deliver toolmakers that are immediately productive in the modern toolmaking environment. It is expected of them to contribute and function productively in a tool shop that uses modern CAD –CAM and CNC technology from the first day of employment.

TASA/NTIP has worked alongside the QCTO (Quality Council for Trades and Occupation) to develop and document a curriculum for the Toolmakers. This document addresses the occupational clusters, occupational fields, subject specifications, practical skills, work experiences modules and criteria required to produce a well-rounded competent modern toolmaker.

However, the employers of these to be qualified toolmaking artisans are the clients and drivers of training. They need to be satisfied with the curriculum.


Please comment to HERMAN, the curriculum developer or to Henk, the TASA Gauteng Secretary, on the curriculum for TOOLMAKER so that your inputs can be incorporated into the final draft.

TASA Gauteng Annual General Meeting – 19^th January 2012

The “New” TASA in Gauteng, with Bevin Davis as chairman and Henk Snyman as the TASA secretary is now two years old.

The TASA Articles of Association stipulatethat a new chairman must be chosen annually for the Gauteng Region. In terms of the rotation policy the Gauteng Chairman is also going to be the National TASA Chairman, and it is therefore important that TASA members in Gauteng make use of this opportunity to choose a chairman that will lead TASA for the next year.

This important event requires that we follow the Constitution to the letter. Therefore the following formal announcements:

1. The AGM for 2011/2012 will now take place on 19^thJanuary 2012 at 2:30 p.m. at The Plastics Federation Offices, 18 Gazelle Avenue, Corporate Park, Midrand.

2. At that AGM, the period of service of the current chairman and office bearers is automatically terminated. A new chairman and office bearers will be elected during the duly constituted AGM by eligible, paid up TASA Gauteng members.

3. The Constitution stipulates that the AGM needs to be announced six weeks before the actual meeting date. Moving the meeting to the 19^thJanuary 2012 allows for this provision.

4. Eligible TASA members wishing to make themselves available for the position of Chairman, Vice Chairman and Office Bearers of TASA Gauteng, are requested to submit their names to the TASA Secretary, Henk Snyman, before or on the date of the AGM. Alternatively, nominations can be made at the meeting at which time candidates need to be able to prove at the meeting that he / she is a TASA member in good standing.

5. A maximum number of nine office bearers (including chairman and vice chairman) can be chosen at the AGM.

6. There is no remuneration attached to the position of any of the office bearers.

7. The office bearers are also ex officio directors of the Gauteng Tooling Initiative - also a pro bono position.

At the meeting the outgoing chairman will presenthis annual report on the activities of TASA and its subsidiaries over the last year. The chairman will answer questions from the floor. An agenda for the meeting will be distributed later.

The position of TASA secretary is an ex officioappointment. The structure is such that the CEO of the Regional Tooling Initiative, in this case the CEO of the Gauteng Tooling Initiative, fulfils the role of secretary.

Members are encouraged to attend the meeting as the office bearers that will be chosen will directly influence the strategy and the visual success of the organisation in all of South Africa.
